Virginia Tech’s recruiting efforts under head coach Brent Pry have been largely successful within the state, but recent developments in the Class of 2026 cycle show the volatility of the process, especially at key offensive skill positions. While Pry has managed to keep the Hokies competitive for top in-state talent, the battle for elite recruits remains fierce — and not always in their favor.
On Thursday, the Hokies landed a crucial victory by securing a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Thomas Wilder, a significant in-state win over regional rivals like North Carolina, Penn State, and Maryland. However, that momentum took a hit just a day later when four-star wide receiver Travis Johnson from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake announced his commitment to Michigan. The 6-foot-3 playmaker chose the Wolverines over a list of suitors that included Virginia Tech, Georgia, North Carolina, and Penn State.
Although Johnson’s decision wasn’t entirely unexpected — recruiting experts had predicted a Michigan lean — it still stings for the Hokies, especially given the recent de-commitments in their 2026 class. Virginia Tech previously landed a commitment from four-star receiver Carnell Warren during the winter, but he backed off his pledge last month. That followed the earlier loss of quarterback Peyton Falzone, who initially committed to the Hokies before flipping to Penn State and then again to Auburn.

With those two key offensive pieces gone, Virginia Tech now finds itself without any commitments at the quarterback or wide receiver positions in the current recruiting cycle. Offensive line recruiting has been a bright spot, but the skill positions — critical to Pry’s long-term offensive vision — remain unfilled. It’s a concerning trend that leaves Tech needing to reassess its approach at these pivotal spots.
Looking ahead, the Hokies could regain some momentum soon. On Saturday, three-star interior offensive lineman Adrian Hamilton is set to announce his college decision, and Virginia Tech is currently the favorite according to 247Sports’ Crystal Ball predictions. A commitment from Hamilton would continue the positive trend on the offensive line, but the staff knows they must begin securing impact players at the skill positions to keep pace in an increasingly competitive recruiting landscape.
