Breaking: Mets Set To Land Another $50 Million 3-times All-Star In a Massive Trade With South Divisional Rival

The New York Mets boast a strong roster this season, but they still have some notable gaps—particularly in the outfield. As the trade deadline approaches, they could look to strengthen that area. Fortunately, several appealing outfielders may become available soon. Nicholas Selbe of Sports Illustrated recently speculated that the Mets might pull off a major deal to acquire Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr.

Selbe noted that although Robert won a Silver Slugger in 2023, his offensive performance has sharply declined since, to the point where he’s now considered a replacement-level player, despite his elite speed and defensive skills.

The two $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, once viewed as potential bargains, now appear unlikely to be picked up. While Robert has improved his plate discipline—with career-best marks in walk rate (10.2%) and chase rate (32.7%)—his very low squared-up rate (17.9%, among the worst in MLB) suggests he still struggles to make quality contact.

The White Sox have little incentive to keep him, but it’s uncertain whether they’ll lower their asking price enough by the trade deadline for another team to make a move. Trading for Robert would carry some risk, given his below-average performance over the last two years and uncertainty about a return to form. However, with multiple years of affordable team control, the gamble could pay off for the Mets. If they can help him rediscover the offensive success he had—highlighted by an OPS well over .800—they might get a major value addition.
