“Lugo has consistently delivered ERAs in the mid-3.00s or better over five seasons, despite having below-average fastball velocity and only solid—not elite—strikeout numbers,” wrote Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel.
“His success comes from his ability to strand runners and avoid hard contact, thanks in part to his arsenal of nine different pitches.”
With a contract similar to Nathan Eovaldi’s likely waiting in free agency, Kansas City may look to trade Lugo—especially with Cole Ragans sidelined and a surplus of pitching depth on hand.
Lugo has been outstanding for the Royals in 2025, but the team’s overall struggles could make him expendable. A trade would represent a win-now move for the Cubs, who have been aggressive in addressing roster needs this season. Packaging prospects for a frontline starter like Lugo—with the aim of extending him long-term—fits Chicago’s current approach.
