Just In: Cubs Get Bad News on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Chicago Cubs recently received disappointing news regarding their pursuit of Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero, a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP, had been a prime target for the Cubs to bolster their lineup.

However, the Blue Jays have made it clear that they have no intention of trading Guerrero. General Manager Ross Atkins stated that the idea of trading Guerrero and fellow star Bo Bichette “doesn’t make any sense” and expressed disappointment that such rumors had even surfaced. He emphasized that while other teams may inquire, the Blue Jays have not seriously considered parting ways with their key players .

Like father, like son: Vlad Guerrero Jr. shines as All-Star

Adding to the complexity, Guerrero’s representatives have reportedly communicated to the Blue Jays that his contract demands are in the vicinity of $600 million over 14 to 15 years. This substantial figure likely places the Cubs, with their more modest payroll, out of contention for securing Guerrero’s services.

Despite these challenges, the Cubs had previously engaged in internal discussions about acquiring Guerrero, especially as the trade deadline approached. A proposed blockbuster trade would have sent Cody Bellinger, Michael Busch, and Cade Horton to Toronto in exchange for Guerrero and pitcher Kevin Gausman. While this deal would have significantly bolstered the Cubs’ roster, it ultimately did not materialize.

With Guerrero now off the market, the Cubs may need to explore alternative options to strengthen their lineup as they continue their season.
