Despite signing a four-year, \$68 million extension just two seasons ago, Alex Highsmith’s name has surfaced in trade speculation. Bleacher Report suggested the Steelers might entertain offers for the standout pass rusher—especially since they reportedly considered trading wide receiver George Pickens earlier this offseason. However, this scenario seems unlikely unless Pittsburgh has a disappointing season, which is less probable if Aaron Rodgers ends up under center. A third-round pick in 2020 out of Charlotte, Highsmith has developed into one of the NFL’s most reliable edge defenders, tallying over 35 sacks, nine forced fumbles, seven pass breakups, and 287 tackles so far in his career.
Although Alex Highsmith’s production has dipped slightly, that alone shouldn’t be the driving factor behind any trade decision—the Steelers are still better with him on the roster. However, with T.J. Watt due for an extension and Highsmith potentially seeking a new deal within the next two years, contract dynamics could complicate Pittsburgh’s long-term plans. If communication between the two star linebackers or with the front office sours, the Steelers may at least explore trade conversations—especially since even Watt found himself in offseason rumors.

Adding to the intrigue is the emergence of Nick Herbig and 2025 third-rounder Jack Sawyer, both of whom bring upside to the edge unit. If one or both begin pushing for serious snaps, Pittsburgh might consider moving Highsmith to recoup draft capital—particularly if they foresee another looming quarterback transition and a partial rebuild.
