GOOD NEWS: Packers Lands Home Another 27-year old Rising Star To $1.5M Bridge Deal

The Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver battle this spring and summer could be one of the most competitive on the entire roster.

Romeo Doubs could be vying not just for the WR1 spot, but also showcasing himself as a potential trade asset for other teams. At the same time, with the Packers selecting blazing-fast Matthew Golden in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the futures of Dontayvion Wicks or Jayden Reed in Green Bay may be in jeopardy.

One of the Packers’ offseason signings could end up being released before ever playing a regular-season snap at Lambeau Field this fall.

Is Mecole Hardman a Top Cut Candidate for the Green Bay Packers?

The Packers brought in Mecole Hardman on a one-year contract this offseason, likely as a backup plan for Christian Watson, to add reliable depth, and as a contingency in case they missed out on a top wide receiver in April’s draft.
However, with the 27-year-old carrying just a \$1.5 million cap hit this season, Hardman could be the most logical candidate to be cut from an increasingly crowded wide receiver group.

“The Packers are dealing with a crowded wide receiver group,” Jordan Wilson writes for Heavy. “Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, first-round pick Matthew Golden, and third-rounder Savion Williams are virtual locks for the 53-man roster—unless a surprise trade deal emerges for one of the veterans. Christian Watson is also expected to remain on the roster, though he may start the season on the PUP list as he continues recovering from his ACL tear in January.”

“That puts Bo Melton, Malik Heath, and veteran free-agent addition Mecole Hardman Jr. in competition for what’s likely the sixth and final receiver spot,” Wilson continues. “The Packers brought in Hardman on a one-year deal during free agency, but that was prior to drafting two more receivers. He could lock down a roster spot by winning the return specialist role in training camp, but Green Bay may just as easily move on if they have alternative return options and believe Heath or Melton offer more long-term potential.”

Hardman has recorded 173 receptions for 2,302 yards and 16 touchdowns over his first seven NFL seasons, but he could have a tough time securing a spot for his eighth year in Green Bay.
