The Chicago Cubs have designated right-handed pitcher Julian Merryweather for assignment following a series of underwhelming performances. After a strong start to the 2025 season with a 2.08 ERA over his first 14 appearances, Merryweather struggled in his recent outings, posting a 14.29 ERA and a 3.177 WHIP over his last seven games.
This decline led to the roster move, with the Cubs calling up right-handed pitcher Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Iowa to fill the vacant spot. Kriske, who has previous MLB experience with the Yankees, Orioles, and Royals, has recorded a 3.38 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP in 13 games over 18⅔ innings at Triple-A this season .

Merryweather’s tenure with the Cubs began in 2023 after being claimed off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. In his first season with Chicago, he appeared in 69 games, posting a 3.38 ERA with a 32.3% strikeout rate. However, injuries limited his appearances in 2024, and he underwent knee surgery in September of that year, sidelining him for the remainder of the season
The Cubs’ bullpen has been a mixed bag this season, with Merryweather’s struggles contributing to the team’s challenges in the relief pitching department. The front office will likely continue to evaluate options to strengthen the bullpen as the season progresses.
