The Chicago Cubs have officially signed left-handed pitcher Génesis Cabrera to a major league contract, bolstering their bullpen for the 2025 season. To make room on the 40-man and 26-man rosters, the team designated right-hander Brooks Kriske for assignment .
Cabrera, 28, has demonstrated solid performances throughout his MLB career. He previously pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2019 to 2023 before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. Although he pitched well for the Jays, the team non-tendered him rather than pay a projected $2.5 million arbitration salary.

Cabrera then signed a minor-league contract with the New York Mets, making seven appearances and posting three runs over 7⅔ innings. The Mets designated him for assignment last week, and after clearing waivers, he elected free agency and signed with the Cubs .
In his MLB career, Cabrera has accumulated a 3.88 ERA, 1.348 WHIP, and 275 strikeouts across 283⅓ innings in 278 games. His addition is expected to provide depth and experience to the Cubs’ bullpen as they aim for a strong 2025 season.
Brooks Kriske, who was designated for assignment, pitched two scoreless innings in his only appearance for the Cubs. He may return to Triple-A Iowa if he clears waivers, though he can also choose free agency
