Cubs Agree to Deal with Former Mets Reliever to Help Bolster Bullpen

The Chicago Cubs have landed some help in the bullpen.

The Chicago Cubs have signed left-handed pitcher Génesis Cabrera to a minor league contract, aiming to strengthen their bullpen. Cabrera, 28, brings six seasons of MLB experience, having pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Mets. He boasts a career ERA of 3.89 with 268 strikeouts in 275⅔ innings. In 2024, he recorded a 3.59 ERA over 69 appearances with the Blue Jays.

Cabrera began the 2025 season with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Mets, posting a 7.88 ERA over seven games. He was promoted to the major league roster on May 1 but was designated for assignment on May 24. After clearing waivers, Cabrera elected free agency on May 27 and subsequently signed with the Cubs.

Known for his fastball-slider combination, Cabrera adds a hard-throwing left-handed option to the Cubs’ bullpen. His experience and strikeout ability provide the team with additional depth as they approach the midpoint of the season.

The Cubs’ next game is scheduled against the Colorado Rockies today, May 28, 2025, at 5:05 PM PDT. Fans can look forward to seeing Cabrera’s potential debut in the coming weeks.
