Just In: Giants Makes Massive Deal Signing In Latest Contract Restructure

The Giants are freeing up some cap space to sign 2025 first-round pick Abdul Carter, which may signal a trade.

While it’s still too early to draw definitive conclusions, the New York Giants’ decision to restructure linebacker Brian Burns’ contract could be a precursor to a trade ahead of the 2025 regular season. Reports suggest the move is intended to create cap space to accommodate first-round pick Abdul Carter. With the recent addition of Chauncey Golston and the presence of Kayvon Thibodeaux—who himself has been the subject of trade speculation—Burns may be viewed as expendable. While the Giants currently have depth and flexibility in their linebacker corps, maintaining that level of talent may not be financially sustainable in the long run.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the former Florida State standout arrived in New York via trade after spending his entire career with the Carolina Panthers. Although he signed a massive \$141 million contract last offseason and delivered a solid debut year with the Giants—finishing with 8.5 sacks and a 79.2 PFF grade—it might not be enough to secure his long-term future with the team. With the Giants already exercising the fifth-year option on Kayvon Thibodeaux, keeping him under contract for two more seasons, Burns could become the odd man out. While there’s no downside to having an abundance of pass-rushers, the numbers and cap realities might ultimately work against him.

The veteran linebacker isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, which means the Giants could command solid draft capital in return if they decide to move him. With his proven production and scheme versatility, he would instantly upgrade most defenses across the league. If Burns does land on the trade block, expect these three teams to aggressively pursue him.

A reunion between Brian Burns and the Carolina Panthers shouldn’t be ruled out. This offseason, the Panthers released veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney as he continues to age and the team faces a pressing need at linebacker. Josey Jewell’s underwhelming performance during the 2024 campaign has only added to the urgency for defensive reinforcements. While the addition of Tershawn Wharton is expected to help shore up the trenches alongside Derrick Brown, Carolina could benefit greatly from bringing back one of their most productive pass-rushers in recent memory. With a capable quarterback finally in place, the Panthers are showing signs of promise—and a return by Burns could provide the defensive spark they need.

With the addition of standout receiver Tetairoa McMillan, the Panthers appear poised to finally ignite their offense. On the other side of the ball, reuniting with Brian Burns could help restore their defensive front to its former dominance. Given his impact potential, Carolina might be willing to part with at least a second-round pick to make the deal happen. Burns would bring immediate leadership and pass-rushing prowess, further solidifying a roster that is beginning to take shape on both sides of the ball.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the Saints find themselves in a troubling position, as their offense continues to unravel this offseason. With Derek Carr now out of the league, new head coach Kellen Moore faces the daunting task of steering the team without a reliable quarterback. While they search for stability under center, the Saints would be wise to strengthen their defense by pursuing a trade for someone like Brian Burns. Pairing Burns with veterans like Cameron Jordan and Pete Werner would provide valuable reinforcement in the trenches. General Manager Mickey Loomis already pulled off a savvy move by bringing in safety Justin Reid to bolster the secondary, and if anyone can maneuver the cap to land a top-tier pass-rusher like Burns, it’s him.

Los Angeles Chargers

However, the Chargers are in desperate need of a spark in their pass-rushing unit following the release of Joey Bosa. While Khalil Mack remains one of the league’s premier linebackers, he can only do so much on his own. Adding a veteran like Brian Burns—despite his age—could be exactly what the defense needs. Head coach Jim Harbaugh is known for his appreciation of tough, old-school football, and Burns’ physical style and experience could fit perfectly within that philosophy. A move like this would not only boost the Chargers’ front seven but also send a strong signal that they’re still aiming to contend.
