The New York Giants have hired Tyson Beane, the son of Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane.
The NFL doesn’t always operate as a pure meritocracy. While top talent tends to rise to the top, many positions within team front offices and coaching staffs are often influenced more by personal connections than by qualifications.
That’s not to say that football can’t be a family affair or that those hired through connections lack ability. Still, the pattern is clear, and it has played a role in the ongoing lack of diversity in leadership roles across the league.
A recent example of this trend came on Thursday, when the New York Giants made a notable hire.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants brought on Tyson Beane, son of Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane.
It’s not surprising that the son of a general manager found an opportunity, but what stands out is that he joined the Giants—likely the top alternative to the Bills. That makes sense, considering Giants GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll both came from Buffalo, where they were instrumental in developing quarterback Josh Allen into a star.
Beane and Schoen’s connection predates their time in Buffalo. They were both part of the Carolina Panthers’ front office when the team reached the Super Bowl. After Beane moved to Buffalo, Schoen stepped into his former role, coming over from the Miami Dolphins.
Schoen also worked in Carolina from 2001 to 2007, during which time Beane advanced through the ranks and eventually became director of football operations in 2008.
Tyson Beane will serve as a scouting assistant for the Giants—the same entry-level position Schoen held when he first joined the Panthers.
It’s difficult to predict Beane’s future, given the instability that often comes with lower-level roles and the uncertain long-term outlook for Schoen and the coaching staff. For instance, head coach Brian Daboll’s son, Christian, departed the team in 2025 after two years as an offensive assistant.
Additionally, Raanan reported that the Giants recently lost offensive assistant Angela Baker, who had been with the team since the current regime took over.
