New Orleans seniors get $80k in scholarships from Pelicans star C.J. McCollum

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January 2024, New Orleans Pelicans guard CJ McCollum announced the launch of the McCollum Scholars Program, a college scholarship initiative aimed at supporting underserved high school students in New Orleans. In collaboration with College Beyond, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting low-income students in pursuing higher education, the program is designed to provide financial, academic, and socio-emotional support to eligible students.

to $80,000 per student, equating to $20,000 annually. The funds can be used for tuition and other college-related expenses, with any remaining balance allocated toward career preparation costs. Beyond financial assistance, scholars receive personalized support, including mentorship, academic coaching, mental wellness resources, and career readiness training. Additionally, during their senior year of high school, students participate in a year-long counseling and cohort engagement program to prepare for the transition to college.

The inaugural class of McCollum Scholars, announced in April 2024, consists of 11 high school juniors from various schools across New Orleans.
