The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing running back Trey Sermon to a one-year deal following his tryout during their rookie minicamp, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Sermon, who played college football at Oklahoma and Ohio State, had expected to be drafted by the Steelers in 2021. However, the team selected Najee Harris in the first round instead.
“I had a lot of communication with them leading up to the draft and even met with them at the combine,” Sermon said. “I really thought they were going to pick me.”
Trey Sermon spent his first three college seasons at Oklahoma before transferring to Ohio State, where he caught the attention of the Steelers and was considered a strong draft candidate. However, he ended up being selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Since then, Sermon has played in 42 NFL games and has moved between several teams. Now, he’s attending Pittsburgh’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, aiming for another shot in the league.
One of Sermon’s standout performances came against the Steelers in 2023, when he rushed for 88 yards on 17 carries.
“They mentioned that game on the first day,” Sermon said. “I’m just trying to make the most of every opportunity. I’m grateful to be here.”
Throughout his NFL career, Sermon has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts, accumulating 506 rushing yards so far.
