Texas Rangers hire former All-Star Bret Boone, brother of Yankees manager, as a hitting coach

The Texas Rangers have appointed former MLB All-Star Bret Boone as their new hitting coach, the team announced on May 5, 2025. Boone, a 14-year veteran and three-time All-Star, brings a wealth of experience to the position. He spent nearly half of his career with the Seattle Mariners and has also played for the Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, and Minnesota Twins.

Over his career, Boone achieved a .266 batting average, 252 home runs, and 1,021 RBIs. He was also a four-time Gold Glove Award winner and a two-time Silver Slugger Award recipient.

At 56, this marks Boone’s first Major League coaching role. He is expected to join the Rangers’ bench ahead of their series opener against the Boston Red Sox. The Rangers have struggled offensively this season, ranking near the bottom of the league in batting average (.228), on-base percentage (.285), and runs scored (113). The team has also lost four of its last five games, being outscored 25-3 in those losses.

Boone reunites with Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, with whom he played during his lone season with the San Diego Padres in 2000. This connection is expected to foster a collaborative environment as they work to improve the team’s offensive performance.

Boone comes from a prominent baseball family. His brother, Aaron Boone, has managed the New York Yankees for the past eight seasons, and his father, Bob Boone, previously managed the Kansas City Royals and Cincinnati Reds for a combined six years.

The Rangers’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, 2025, against the Boston Red Sox.
