The Detroit Tigers have bolstered their pitching roster by acquiring left-hander Bailey Horn from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The move comes after the Cardinals designated Horn for assignment to make room for newly signed reliever Phil Maton. In exchange, the Tigers sent an undisclosed amount of cash to the Cardinals.
Notably, this marks Horn’s second stint with the Tigers, having previously been claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox in November before being designated for assignment himself.
The Detroit Tigers have acquired 27-year-old left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn from the St. Louis Cardinals. Horn’s baseball journey began at Auburn, where he played college ball before being drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2020. He has since been traded several times, with stints with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox.
In 2024, Horn delivered impressive performances for Triple-A Worcester, striking out 35 batters in 29 innings with a 2.15 ERA. However, he struggled with command issues during his time with the Red Sox, walking 10 batters and striking out 13 in 18 innings.
As a result, Horn will begin the season with Triple-A Toledo and will not participate in the Tigers’ big-league camp or compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster. With Horn’s addition, the Tigers’ 40-man roster is now full.
Here is the updated roster:
– Left-handed pitchers: Sean Guenther, Tyler Holton, Bailey Horn, Brant Hurter, and Tarik Skubal
– Right-handed pitchers: 18 players, including John Brebbia and Casey Mize
– Catchers: Dillon Dingler and Jake Rogers
– Infielders: 9 players, including Javier Baez and Gleyber Torres
The Detroit Tigers’ outfield corps consists of six players: Kerry Carpenter, Riley Greene, Justyn-Henry Malloy, Parker Meadows, Wenceel Perez, and Matt Vierling.
Meanwhile, three right-handed pitchers – Alex Lange, Sawyer Gipson-Long, and Jose Urquidy – are currently on the 60-day injured list, recovering from various surgeries, and are not included in the team’s 40-man roster count.
